About Pack 98

Who, Where, and When

Cub Scout Pack 98 is based at Barkstall Elementary School in Champaign, IL. We are chartered by the 'Concerned Parents of Barkstall School'. We are a part of the Boy Scouts of America - Prairielands Council, Prairie Fire District. Our Pack meets regularly on Thursday evenings at 7 PM for approximately one hour.

The program consists of boys and girls in K through 5th grade (or between 5 and 10 years of age). Each age group works and has fun separately from the others in a Den. A child can join scouting at any time, at any age, and does not need to be a Barkstall Elementary student to join Cub Scout Pack 98.

The Pack is run by Parent Volunteers! Our direct contact Leaders are Boy Scouts of America (BSA) 'Trained'. The scouting programs offered are great because of the people who run them. Small groups meet periodically to plan Den Meetings, Pack Meetings and Special Events. Every parent is expected to sign up to offer assistance in some way.

We are a Quality Unit Award winner and National Summertime Pack Award recipient. The Pack encourages the summer camping offered through the local council. For those that are unable or do not wish to attend camp can participate in other events during the summer. A Fishing Derby, Family Picnic, Swimming, and Hiking have been some of the Pack sponsored events in addition to the Council Camps.

Pack 98 does ask for an annual registration fee when the new scouting year begins in the fall. The fees cover handbooks, advancement awards, craft supplies, National Cub Scout Registration fees, and Scout Life Magazine.

A uniform is required to participate in cub scouting. The uniform enhance the cub scout experience and is used to  display awards and achievements. The 1st Graders,(Tiger Cub), 2nd Graders (Wolf), and 3rd Graders (Bear) wear the same navy blue uniform shirts and change neckerchief and slides yearly. The 4th Graders and 5th Graders (Webelos) wear the khaki uniform shirts which they continue to wear in Boy Scouts after crossing over in their 5th Grade year.

We conduct one fund-raiser a year to raise funds for the Pack. The event is the annual Popcorn Sales in the month of October. The boys are asked to sell the product to help the Pack and local council. For those who sell, camp credits are earned to use toward summer camping as well as different prizes offered based on the level of sales.

Good behavior is expected of the boys at all scouting events. We use the 'Three Strike' model to address inappropriate behavior at meetings. One strike is a warning, Parents will be called if a boy receives two or three strikes.

In the past year, we've gone fishing, bowling, hiking, on a tour of the fire station, attended the Cubs & Cards baseball game in St. Louis, went swimming at Caribbean Cove Water Park in Indianapolis, and gone to summer camp!!

Join Scouting

Cub Scouting members join a Cub Scout Pack and are assigned to a Den, usually a neighborhood group of six to eight children. Lion Cubs (Kindergarten) Tiger Cubs (1st graders), Wolf Cub Scouts (2nd graders), Bear Cub Scouts (3rd graders), and Webelos Scouts (4th and 5th graders) meet weekly.

Once a month, all of the Dens and family members gather for a Pack Meeting under the direction of a Cubmaster and Pack Committee. The committee includes parents of scouts in the Pack and members of the chartered organization.

We encourage prospective scouts to try out at least two meetings to see if scouting with Pack 98 is a good fit between the child and the Pack.  Once it seems that the Pack and the child fit, then we will discuss the forms that are required and payment to be an official member of Pack 98.

A child can join scouts at any level; at any age… Becoming a Bear is not dependent on being a Tiger and Wolf.

Pack 98 meets at Barkstall Elementary School located in southwest Champaign. The meetings usually take place on Thursday nights at 7 PM and last for about 1 hour.

If you are interested in having your child join Pack 98 and the Prairielands Council please contact us by email at champaignpack98@gmail.com, or feel free to drop by one of our meetings (see our Calendar).

NOTE: Your child does not have to be a student at Barkstall Elementary to join in the fun with Cub Scout Pack 98.
